System Planning Engineer/Analyst – Generation Planning & Development

This position will be located at APC Headquarters in Birmingham, AL


This position serves on the Asset Valuation and Environmental Planning (AEP) team within the Generation Planning & Development (GPD) organization. AEP is responsible for asset valuation economic studies of the existing retail generation fleet including the evaluation of renewable, battery storage, hydro, nuclear, and traditional generation resources. AEP supports environmental compliance strategy development, major capital expenditure, asset retirement decisions and unit license extension studies. This position is responsible for providing production cost analysis and system planning support with the objective of minimizing the total cost of electricity while maintaining high reliability.

The team partners with the retail operating companies in the development of the company’s generation strategy in collaboration with System Planning, Resource Planning, Transmission Planning, Research and Environmental Affairs, Technical and Project Solutions, Fuels, Finance, and Operations.


  • Perform financial and risk analysis of environmental compliance and other major retrofit/repair expenditure options in support of SCS and OpCo executive decision making, e.g. cost effectiveness studies, least cost compliance studies, alternative technology benefit studies, asset retirement studies, and other cost reducing/risk mitigating strategies

  • Demonstrate analytical ability and proficiency in economic evaluation processes and tools in conducting analyses such as unit retirement, gas conversion and asset valuations/uprates studies

  • Support generation transition strategies and provide analyses for fleet of the future. Conduct impact analysis and provide input and financial analysis of new or proposed environmental requirements

  • Support the development, coordination and communication of the environmental strategy effort to stakeholders across the system

  • Support state public service commission regulatory filing activities, including filings for rate cases, IRPs, certificates, project updates, data requests and other filing requests as they pertain to unit viability and environmental issues

  • Maintain and optimize analytical tools as needed to perform and/or improve work product and efficiency


Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, applied science, mathematics, economics or finance required

  • An advanced degree is desirable

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: financial analysis; production cost modeling; generation, transmission, or environmental planning

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency with standard analytical and business software such as Microsoft Office applications is required; experience with PowerBI, VBA, Aurora and fundamental production cost models is preferred

  • Conduct economic evaluations of generation alternatives using spreadsheets, production simulation software, and/or financial models

  • Project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects with conflicting deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to consensus build and effectively communicate complex topics

  • Proven analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex topics verbally and in written form

  • Exposure to areas of fleet operations, regulatory affairs, fuels, risk analysis, and/or forecasting is a plus

  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations and legislation is beneficial
