The Costing and Demand-side Support team is responsible for developing the Integrated Demand-side Management strategy and supporting analysis. As part of the team, the successful candidate’s work will inform the company’s larger strategic objectives and initiatives around energy efficiency (EE), demand response (DR), distributed energy resources (DER), electrification, EVs, customer emissions reductions, etc. The successful candidate will enhance efforts to accurately model, value, and assist development of these demand-side programs across all jurisdictions.
This helps Southern Company and subsidiaries perform interdisciplinary economic analyses to support the pricing, planning, and demand functions of the company. The role conducts technical studies using inputs from, and communicating results to, partners from distribution/transmission engineering, generation system planning, corporate finance, forecasting, load research and other job functions. The successful candidate will develop subject matter expertise and be able to communicate that expertise to broad audiences.
Develop cost-benefit studies for:
System’s proprietary end-use marginal model
Cost-of-service studies in rate cases, and
New tools for evaluating extreme weather, locational value, emissions profiles, etc.
Propose innovative solutions to enhance customer programs’ value
Develop costing-related engineering studies (e.g. minimum distribution system, line loss studies)
Support company and industry analyses impacting policy, R&D initiatives, and external ESG reporting
Assist with regulatory filings, including data requests, testimony, etc.
Update and improve existing analysis and processes to reflect changing system and policy conditions
Provide internal clients technical expertise for program development
Very limited travel
Degree in Engineering or another technical field required
Graduate Degree in interdisciplinary energy program is preferred but not required
Start dates can be flexible based on pending graduation
CEM and/or PE certification is a plus
- Hybrid – Work will be performed both remotely and in the Atlanta, GA offices.
Previous work experience in the Energy Industry or a Graduate Degree in an interdisciplinary energy program or economics
Knowledge of or experience with any of the following functions is helpful, but not required:
Electric Utility Planning
Energy-related Data analytics
Demand Side Management Program support
Electric Regulation or Policy
Demonstrated experience statistical methodologies, engineering modeling, or financial analysis
Acute attention to detail and ability to contextualize those details in the bigger picture
Demonstrate strong initiative, follow-through, ownership of responsibilities, and independent thinking
Strong written, oral, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills are required
Knowledge of and extensive experience in Microsoft Excel. Experience with coding is a plus.
Must have the ability to work in and contribute to a team environment
