Engineer, Dam Safety (Hydro Services – Southern Company Generation)

This position will serve as part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting Southern Company’s electric generating plants. This position is responsible for dam safety for Georgia Power hydroelectric projects. This work will include these activities:

  • Conduct periodic dam safety inspections of soil, concrete, and steel structures.

  • Monitor dam safety instrumentation such as piezometers, weirs, wells, and deformation monuments, and interpret the information.

  • Track compliance with plant operating licenses, inspection recommendations, and other compliance issues.

  • Interface with federal dam safety officials.

  • Prepare dam monitoring status reports for FERC.

  • Prepare engineering calculations of dam stability required to demonstrate compliance with FERC dam safety guidelines.

  • Conduct or coordinate analyses, designs, specifications, and requests for proposals.

  • Ensure the accomplishment of any needed repairs

  • Coordinate and interface with independent dam safety consultants for the performance of FERC five-year inspection reports.

Other duties assigned may include assisting with hydro plant relicensing efforts, hydrology studies, hydraulics studies, slope stability analyses, seepage analyses, contract management, etc. depending on the needs of the subject facilities.

This position reports to the Dam Safety and Surveillance Supervisor in the Southern Company Generation Hydro Services group in Atlanta.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Master's or Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering is required

Experience:

  • At least five years of experience in civil engineering is required.

  • At least one year of experience interfacing with government regulators or other governmental entities is preferred.

  • Minimum of two years of experience working with dams (design, construction, inspection, analyses) is preferred.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • An understanding of the basic principles of structures, soil mechanics, and hydraulics is required.

  • The proven ability to develop an excellent working relationship with clients is required.

  • Strong observational skills are required.

  • Strong organizational skills are required.

  • Strong written communication skills are required. The successful candidate must have the ability to produce coherent documents that will withstand regulatory scrutiny.

  • Strong oral communication skills are required. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively and to work constructively with other groups within Southern Company and with outside agencies.

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Word and Excel, are required.

  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings is required.

  • Skill with AutoCAD and PowerPoint is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with government regulators is preferred.

  • The proven ability to work harmoniously with multi-disciplinary teams is preferred.

  • Leadership skills preferred

Other Requirements:

  • Extensive travel in Georgia including some overnight travel is required.

  • Extensive walking up and down earthen slopes and stairs is required
