Southern Company seeks to further its industry leadership in the research and development sector by adding a Research Engineer within Southern Company Gas. This includes, but is not limited to, research relating to natural gas distribution, transmission, storage, liquefaction, and end-use solutions. To succeed, talented, motivated, and educated engineers are required to advance technologies and programs applicable to the natural gas industry. As the team member focused on natural gas, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with the research, development, and demonstration of innovative solutions with the natural gas industry.

Initial assignments will include understanding what solutions are currently in scope within the natural gas industry through national research institutes (such as GTI and NYSEARCH) and identifying potential opportunities within Southern Company Gas. The work scope requires the incumbent to collaborate with the top experts in the industry, colleagues and contractors, as well as working independently reviewing technical information in journals, conference proceedings, patents, textbooks and other reference materials to identify, develop, validate, and demonstrate a portfolio of potential solutions that will benefit Southern Company Gas. Significant travel (up to 50%) will be required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Research, develop, and demonstrate new and innovative solutions for Southern Company Gas as it relates to natural gas distribution, transmission, storage, liquefaction, and end-use products

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver research proposals to internal and external funding agents

  • Leverage research resources with other utilities (including Southern Company operating companies), institutes, universities, and agencies to address Southern Company Gas’ technology needs

  • Manage research projects with respect to budgets, intellectual property, confidentiality, public relations, and technology transfer to achieve research objectives and business goals

  • Provide effective and timely communications to all participants on research program activity, research results and accomplishments

  • Provide technical consulting to internal clients and direct industry collaborative research efforts

JOB REQUIREMENTS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is required (Mechanical preferred but others considered)

  • Advanced degree (M.S., PhD) strongly preferred

  • Specific experience in the energy sector (preferably natural gas), energy storage, or renewables is preferred

  • Preferred experience working in a Project Management, Project Development or Product Development role, specifically in the energy industry

  • Proven leadership and team building skills, with the ability to build and foster relationships

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, challenges status quo, innovator, self-assured, self-starter; strong initiative is an important attribute for this position

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Day-trip and overnight travel will be required (approximately 25%-50% per year)
