High Energy Piping Engineer

This position will be located at the Energy Center in Birmingham, AL
SUMMARY OF POSITION DUTIES
This position is assigned to the Technical Shared Services, Mechanical Field Services department. It provides high energy piping (HEP) work activities, including, but not limited to, the following:
Stress analysis of HEP systems
Specification of HEP supports
Providing technical direction in the NDE inspection of HEP welds and components
Participation in HEP related industry groups (e.g. ASME/EPRI)
Application of ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code
Field evaluation of HEP dynamic loading events
Inspection and evaluation of HEP support systems
Providing HEP temporary restraint/supporting plans in support of maintenance activities
Structural evaluation of HEP hangers, assemblies, and associated structural steel
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university or PE license with related experience
Mechanical or Civil/Structural Engineering degree preferred
Experience
Required:
Detailed knowledge of HEP stress analysis principles and techniques
Fossil power plant field experience working with HEP
Fossil power plant field experience inspecting/troubleshooting HEP hanger and structural issues
Working knowledge of HEP supports, including variable spring, constant and snubber function and design
General knowledge of HEP NDE inspection techniques
Preferred:
Working knowledge of Bentley AutoPIPE piping stress analysis software
Working knowledge of the ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code applicable to piping design and analysis
Experience in the detailed design of HEP supports
Experience working with contractors
Working knowledge of formal calculation documentation processes
General knowledge of ASTM specifications for piping, structural shapes, plates and bars
General knowledge of structural engineering principles to provide HEP temporary restraint/supporting plans in support of maintenance activities (e.g. cutting pipe to install new valve)
General understanding of fossil power plant systems and operations
Travel Requirements
This position requires extensive travel (approximately 50%-75%)
This will include both day-trip and overnight travel and will be primarily within the Southern Company Generation fleet.
