SPC Monitoring & Diagnostic Analyst (M&D Analyst)
This position will function as part of the Southern Power Monitoring & Diagnostic Center, which provides remote monitoring and support to the SPC fleet. This position is responsible for providing advanced condition monitoring and analysis of data important to the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical power plant systems, components, and processes. Incumbents in this position will utilize advanced pattern recognition software and other tools to identify and analyze potential failure and degradation anomalies.
This position will closely support and interface with plant Operations and System Owners as well as subject matter experts in Technical Services or elsewhere, to assess anomalies, identify and classify the associated risks to the plant, issue recommendations, and follow up to ensure resolutions are tracked through to completion.
The Center serves as the central hub for integrating multiple sources of information, such as OIS, MAXIMO, and others, to ensure all available data is leveraged to the greatest benefit of the plant and the fleet. This position will also be involved in the development, maintenance, and refinement of software models utilizing advanced algorithms.
This position will play a key role in like-unit comparisons, identifying and communicating best practices, applying lessons learned across the fleet, and ensuring consistency, to improve processes and drive down repeat failures. The position will also provide key support to Root Cause Analysis Investigations and Operating Review Boards (ORBs). In addition, this position will provide fleet-wide support for vibration monitoring and diagnostics systems.
This position will be located at the Southern Power Monitoring & Diagnostic Center in Birmingham, AL and will be filled at a level and job classification commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
Extensive experience & knowledge in vibration diagnostics required.
Experience with advanced pattern recognition (APR) tools and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) technologies desired.
Power plant field experience is required.
Combined cycle or combustion turbine plant experience preferred.
Hands-on experience with plant data historians (OIS and PI) – building trends and analyzing data – required.
Detailed understanding of power plant equipment, operations, systems, and processes preferred.
Knowledge of and experience with different power generation technologies including gas, solar, wind, batteries, and fuel cells is preferred.
Extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of power plant Operations, I&C, CBM, Performance, and/or Engineering.
Experience with data management techniques to access, integrate, and present data from multiple sources is desired.
Knowledge of data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML), and business analytic software desired.
Experience in organizing and managing multiple projects at the same time. Proven ability to plan and ability to discern problems that need immediate attention versus those that allow more time to resolve.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
Proficiency in vibration analysis and troubleshooting equipment issues.
Proficiency in Bently Nevada System 1, National Instruments Insight CM, or other similar vibration diagnostics tools.
Preferred experience in an advanced pattern recognition (APR) tool (e.g. AVEVA Predictive Analytics or ECG Predict-IT)
Must be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience in using data historians (OIS and PI) and other software tools to analyze and troubleshoot problems
Proficiency in the use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, and other applications.

Provide daily monitoring, assessment, and retraining of advanced pattern recognition (APR) model reliability alarms of our gas fleet.
Provide technical expertise to identify and assist in the resolution of plant generation and equipment vibration, performance, and reliability issues.
Develop, deploy, monitor, and refine effective on-line equipment models in our APR tool.
Identify and resolve data acquisition gaps and optimize the performance of computer-based models’ usage of process data.
Provide timely and accurate support for information requests related to equipment reliability.
Test and validate new condition monitoring processes for the fleet and maintain familiarity with emerging diagnostic technologies throughout industry.
Provide fleetwide support to SPC for vibration monitoring and diagnostics tools.
Establish ongoing relationships and effectively communicate with all levels of plant and corporate employees and management; Vendors, Peer Groups and Subject Matter Experts concerning operation, maintenance repairs, replacement, modifications, improvements, and schedules.
Take an active role in the development of new employees.
Total travel time will be around 10%.
Position does not currently require shift work but may in the future.
