This position is best suited for an individual desiring a technical career progression responsible for leading and performing power system technical studies in support of various groups within Southern Company. The successful candidate will be part of a team that performs: switching transients studies (e.g., capacitor bank, transformer energization, etc.); insulation coordination studies; transmission power quality studies (e.g., harmonics, harmonic filter bank design, and flicker); unbalanced power flow studies; circuit breaker transient recovery voltage analysis; post event (root cause) analysis and other special technical studies as required to support Southern Company and the Operating Companies.

This position will also perform transmission planning studies on the Southern Company Bulk Transmission System. These studies involve: evaluating the effects of geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) events on the Southern Company Transmission System, assessing the impact of generation interconnections on transmission power quality, and performing harmonic planning studies.

The successful candidate will work with multiple groups including other teams within Transmission Planning, Transmission Control Centers, Research and Development, Operating Company Transmission, Distribution and Generation departments, neighboring transmission systems, etc. The successful candidate will also be responsible for presenting study results to management, internal and external customers for information and support.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required.

  • Advanced degree or post graduate classes in Electrical Engineering with electric power systems emphasis is a plus but not required.

Job Requirements

  • This job may be filled from the entry level engineer to a senior engineer level depending on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The job will entail exposure to a wide range of power system analysis opportunities including:

  • Short circuit analysis and power system modeling to support analytical studies.

  • Transients and insulation coordination studies using EMTP-RV and industry standards and best practices.

  • Transmission system power quality studies using both phasor domain and time domain methods.

  • Research of special technical issues impacting the electric power system.

  • Coordination with others in Transmission Planning to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions.

  • Other technical studies, as requested, in support of Southern Company and the Operating Companies.

  • Coordination with multiple groups and internal customers within Southern Company and the Operating Companies.

  • Limited overnight travel will be required but is minimal.

Experience Requirements

  • Experience in electrical power system modeling and analysis is a plus.

  • Experience with computer programming (MATLAB, C, Visual Basic, VB.Net, or Python) related to study automation is preferred.

  • Experience in performing power system transients, insulation coordination and/or power quality studies is a plus but is not required.

  • General knowledge of design, control and operation of a bulk electric system a plus.

  • Demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills

  • Have good time management and organizational skills in order to balance multiple projects simultaneously and adhere to deadlines.

  • Have knowledge of symmetrical components, power system modeling and fault analysis (knowledge of time-domain analysis is preferred).

  • Be proficient with power system modeling and analytical software which could include: CAPE, ASPEN, PSS/E, PowerWorld, MATLAB, Mathcad, SINCAL, ATP, PSCAD, (EMTP-RV is preferred).
