Southern Nuclear, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. In addition, construction is ongoing on our two new reactors at our Plant Vogtle location.

We currently have an opportunity located near Dothan, AL at Plant Farley for a Maintenance Engineer.

Summary of Job Duties:

Maintenance Engineers are responsible for implementation of various maintenance programs; problem identification followed by investigation, evaluation, and resolution; evaluating and implementing industry operating experience; and providing general engineering and technical support to the maintenance teams as needed. The Maintenance Engineers provide support through monitoring of plant equipment and resolution of day-to-day problems during work activities. Their responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • Lead emergent issue resolution

  • Act as first responders and lead troubleshooting on abnormal operating equipment

  • Coordinate with equipment vendors for proper product supply or services

  • Assist with development, implementation, and improvement of PM Technical Bases

  • Ensure cost benefit analysis balanced against PM effectiveness

  • Act as a project manager

  • Resolve problems encountered by Craft during day-to-day work activities

  • Coordinate with System Engineering and off-site Engineering to resolve equipment problems that are the result of design issues

  • Solve equipment problems through evaluations and modifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or PE is required. Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degrees preferred

  • Previous commercial or Navy nuclear experience is preferred

  • 5 years of related experience in industrial manufacturing or utility preferred.

  • Motor operated valve knowledge and training

  • Welding and SME code knowledge preferred

  • An ability to solve problems and make sound engineering decisions, based on experience and appropriate industry practices, in order to make timely decisions which might impact plant safety and reliability

  • Technical writing ability, computer knowledge and good communication skills are required

  • Project oversight experience is desired

Please note: This position may require the successful completion of the SNC Initial Engineering Training as a condition of continued employment. The training is a rigorous period that may require studying after work hours.
