Principal Engineer , Transmission Protection & Control Field Services
JOB SUMMARY
The successful candidate will be responsible for technical and hands-on support of Protection & Control Field Services (PCFS) personnel also known as Test Engineering. This position will be involved with initiating targeted relay upgrades and providing scope for comprehensive substation rebuild projects. He or she will be responsible for helping manage the PCFS GRID capital budget projects. The successful candidate will represent Georgia Power Company (GPC) on Southern Company (SoCo) committees helping shape the technical direction of future substation designs. These are field positions. Safety and Quality are paramount in this position. The successful candidate shall participate in the substation support callout rotation and be available to provide technical assistance outside of the normal work schedule. This position will support PCFS field operations: GRID projects, any necessary training, and critical capital projects with the needed PCFS expertise.
NOTE: This position will be filled in the P&C Field Services Test Engineer family at Level 7 Exempt.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the “go to person” for GPC PCFS engineers providing technical guidance/help with field issues.
Look to remove traps and potential failures that may lead to interruptions. Identify the Root Cause to resolve problems. Ensuring Lessons learned are incorporated in all aspects of job responsibilities
Share technical expertise in 3-phase power, relaying, SCADA, and substation testing techniques with other engineers by assisting with formal training and during informal interactions such as when providing field support.
Maintains Transmission Support Callout Schedule
Fully support all GRID projects in assigned area
Southern Company P&C Design Responsibilities
Ensuring GPC needs are represented during standard development
Provides conduit for GPC lessons learned to SoCo standards.
P&C capital budgets responsibilities
Initiates targeted relay upgrades to eliminate trouble prone/obsolete relays.
When needed, scopes companion projects to upgrade substation P&C equipment to be worked parallel with equipment swaps and other substation capital projects.
Sets relaying scope for comprehensive substation rebuild projects.
Support all GRID projects in assigned area
Any critical substation projects
Any needed training for PCFS field personnel
Oversight as necessary
Lead on projects as necessary
P&C maintenance responsibilities
Evaluates vendor service notifications for potential operational and compliance risk.
Initiates Modifications projects to eliminate known operational risks.
Updates/Maintains GPC guidelines to incorporate lessons learned
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Requirements
Professional Engineer License required
BS or B degree or higher in Engineering (ABET accredited degree) required
Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred
Advanced degree a plus
Experience Requirements
Must have PCFS or test engineering experience commissioning substation protection and control schemes on transmission and distribution equipment.
Minimum of 5 years P&C Field Services (Test Engineering) or equivalent experience required.
Electric power utility transmission experience a plus: P&C Applications, Design, Construction, Major Equipment, Project Management, etc.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Possess and maintains a high level of technical expertise in substation relaying, fault data, and SCADA equipment and systems.
Familiarity of Substation configurations/arrangements required.
Analytical skills
Knowledge of 3-phase power systems
Knowledge of AC/DC protection and control schemes
Good computer and communication skills

Available to provide technical support and assistance outside normal business hours.
Must participate in Transmission Support call rotation.
Membership in a professional organization (such as IEEE) desired.
Additional Details
Travel
Up to 50% travel should be expected within the Georgia Power footprint.
Some travel to other Southern Company Operational companies.
Occasional travel external to the Southern Company Territory.
Relocation/Telecommuting
This position has some flexibility for remote teleworking, but successful candidate should live in Atlanta or the southern ½ of the state.…Living/moving to Atlanta area will not be a requirement.
Relocation assistance may be available for this position.
