Project Engineer

Technical & Project Solutions (T&PS), Project Engineering Department

This position will be located in either Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA (Metro-Atlanta)


A Project Engineer acts as the engineering manager for design activities for a variety of projects throughout Southern Company. Projects include large capital and maintenance (retrofits), in the areas of environmental, new electric utility power generation including gas and renewables, control systems, gas, and electric utility transmission systems. This role is responsible for managing the engineering scope, engineering budgets, engineering schedules, and serves as the main point of contact for engineering deliverables to the project manager.

The Project Engineer also works with design disciplines to ensure adequate and qualified resources are assigned to the project, anticipating changes in project scope, budget, and schedule requirements, and developing/communicating mitigation plans for those changes. They also identify and communicate lessons learned and facilitate resolving engineering and vendor related issues. This position is also required to maintain accurate project records in a variety of project management applications

This Project Engineer position will be filled at a Level 6 or 7, based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.


  • Up to 50% travel should be expected within the Southern Company footprint

  • Travel frequency will be dictated by the specific project(s) supported


  • Some relocation assistance may be available for this position if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Atlanta or Birmingham area

  • This position may have some flexibility for remote teleworking, with the expectation that the successful candidate would be willing to travel to Birmingham, Forest Park, and/or the project site on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis



  • B.S. in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus

Technical & Leadership Experience:

  • 5 years’ experience in one the of the following areas:

  • Design or project management as related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for heavy industrial projects, or electric utility distribution and/or transmission systems

  • Formal or informal experience in a lead-type role (i.e. directing activities of direct reports or project team members)

  • Experience working in (or indirect support of)at least one of the following areas is required:

  • Power plant operations

  • Plant facility operations (Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Oil, etc.)

  • Electric utility distribution and/or transmission systems

  • Budget/schedule management

  • Understanding of project change control

  • Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutions

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes.

  • Must possess strong management and organization skills.

  • Ability to build a strong, diverse team.

  • The incumbent must possess the skills to balance customer satisfaction priorities with those deriving from project restraints.

  • Ability to work successfully and build relationships across operating companies.
