Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of Southern Company, manages and operates six nuclear power electric generating plants that provide approximately 20 percent of the electricity used in Alabama and Georgia. Southern Nuclear is leading the nuclear renaissance by building the first new U.S. nuclear reactors in more than 25 years. When completed, the two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors currently under construction at Plant Vogtle will make the facility the largest in the U.S. with four reactors on one site.

Summary

Maintenance Engineers implement various maintenance programs; identify and solve problems through investigation, evaluation, and resolution; evaluate and implement industry operating experience; and provide general engineering and technical support to maintenance teams. Maintenance Engineers provide support by monitoring equipment, resolving day-to-day problems, and providing technical guidance.

Their responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading the resolution of emergent issues and troubleshooting of equipment

  • Ensuring maintenance effectiveness is balanced with risk and cost

  • Developing and applying predictive maintenance (PdM) technologies to preempt equipment failures

  • Developing vendor specifications for equipment overhauls and monitoring the quality of onsite services

  • Providing technical oversight for major equipment refurbishments

  • Coordinating with equipment vendors for proper product supply or services

  • Coordinating and overseeing offsite repair work and outsourced maintenance

  • Act as a Project Manager and/or Maintenance Supervisor during outages

  • Providing technical support and guidance to Planners developing work packages

  • Resolving engineering problems encountered during around-the-clock work activities

  • Coordinating with Systems Engineering, Design Engineering, Procurement Engineering and off-site Engineering to resolve problems

  • Administrate, coordinate, and provide technical oversight of various Programs, such as: Lifting and Rigging, Welding, ASME Repair and Replacement (R&R), Valve Packing, temporary Leak Repair, Breakers, Large Motors, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A BS degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program or a PE license is required

  • Ability to solve problems and make sound engineering decisions in a timely manner based on experience and industry best practices

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Must be well organized and capable of handling multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Displays high level of ownership for assigned responsibilities

  • Conflict resolution skills that foster collaboration and reinforce trust

  • Holds self and others accountable for results

  • Values diversity and respects others

  • Available to provide occasional plant support beyond normal work hours

Background/Experience:

  • 2 or more years of Power Plant, Manufacturing, or Heavy Industrial experience is preferred

  • Areas that are of high value:

  • Knowledge of Digital Controls (PLC) troubleshooting and programming preferred

  • Pressure, temperature, vibrational equipment, and signal transfer troubleshooting

  • Proficiency with large rotating machinery maintenance

  • Lifting and Rigging evaluations, including calculations

  • Freeze Seal evaluation/implementation

  • Temporary Leak Repair evaluations

  • Nuclear Safety-Related Coatings (corrosion prevention)

  • Valve and Valve control (Air, Hydraulic, Motor) maintenance

  • Industrial equipment lubrication

  • Value Based Maintenance Strategies

  • ASME Section IX and Section XI

  • Welding, NDT/NDE strongly preferred
