Southern Nuclear Operating Company, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two operating reactors at Plant Vogtle 1&2, near Waynesboro, GA; two operating reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two operating reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. In addition, two new AP1000 units are joining the fleet with Unit 3 having just entered Commercial Operation and Unit 4 completing initial fuel load.

Job Summary

Program Engineers act as the site lead on development and implementation of the requirements applicable to their assigned programs, and aid in the troubleshooting or complex problem solving of issues within their expertise.

Prior to plant operation, responsibilities include ensuring regulatory and code required testing is performed or credited through the Initial Test Program activities, maintaining and issuing revisions to base program documents, and working with ITP and Operations to resolve issues with associated testing.

After Plant Operation, responsibilities include ensuring program required activities and support needs are scheduled according to site procedures for outages, assisting in program readiness and challenge meetings, and leveraging resources across the organization to continuously improve program performance.

Examples of engineering programs include: Steam Generator Program, Equipment Qualification program, Fatigue Monitoring Program, Cable Monitoring Program, Inservice Testing, Appendix J Leak Rate Testing, etc.

Educational Requirements

· BS in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution required

· Electrical Engineer or Mechanical Engineer preferred

Background/Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum eight (8) years of engineering related experience preferred

  • Minimum five (5) years of nuclear plant experience preferred

  • Ensures quality decisions are made by considering financial implications of decisions and actions to ensure costs are controlled.

  • Working knowledge in nuclear plant systems, structures, and components preferred

  • Assumes personal responsibility for individual and team success

  • Proven organizational skills with ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office products, specifically WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT

Technical Requirements:

  • Detailed knowledge of plant procedures and regulations in assigned area

  • Detailed knowledge of plant systems and processes

  • Working knowledge of computer software programs supporting assigned area

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to gain unescorted access to Southern Nuclear's Vogtle Electric Generating Plant is required.

  • This position requires the successful completion of the SNC Initial Engineering Training as a condition of continued employment. The training is approximately 6 weeks long and is a rigorous period that may require studying after work hours.

  • Each department engineer will be assigned as backup for additional programs. It is expected that engineers will develop a working level of knowledge to support these areas

· Vogtle 3&4 Engineering maintains a duty support rotation and qualified Emergency Response Organization (ERO) staffing. Each department engineer is expected to participate in these rotations in addition to their normal assignments. This may include rotations in mid or back shift if plant needs dictate
